There are some great city break deals to be found staying in some of the most romantic cities in Europe. Of course Paris, in France – the great city of love, comes first. There are some very good, economical Paris city breaks available, whether ypu travel by air from England’s regional airports or by Eurostar from the centre of London. You might also consider some of the other major European cities though, such as Amsterdam or Venice, or Stokholm. It may help to think in terms of these three general types of short breaks, although of course you can break out of the categories and form your own unique style or design when it comes to picking a theme.
1) City breaks: Europe’s cities are not the only beautiful, interesting locations, but they often are the place where culture and history are most obviously accessible. The great cities of Europe also provide long walks, old and new parts of town, public transport, and inexpensive guided tours that show first time visitors all the main sights and hot spots.
2) Train breaks. Taking to the railways is often the best choice for a short or long weekend break for several reasons. It is far more environmentally friendly, a lot easier with baggage and security, and it also allows you to soak up the sights of your chosen city break destination. In addition, nearly every destination in Europe is accessible by rail travel. For especially appealing weekend breaks, consider taking the train to Dublin, Edinburgh, or Stockholm.
3) Culture breaks. Europe has a wealth of cultural centres in the form of museums, art galleries, theatres and opera houses, many of which can be taken in during a weekend break in just one city if the choice is made with care. Again, Paris comes top of the list but there’s also London, Edinburgh, Florence, Berlin, Copenhagen and Bruges to consider. I’d like to single out Budapest though:
Budapest consists of two separate cities, Buda and Pest, located opposite each other on the river Danube. The Buda half is very cultural, with many cafes, bars, music and a classic intellectual coffee scene. Pest is the commercial centre , but also home to some museums, the fantastic riverside Parliament and the recently restored Cathedral of St. Stephen.
Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city and the capital of Catalonia, an old nation with it’s own language that once spanned across much of the western mediterranean. The city has a wealth of unique historic architecture and has emerged as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe during the 1990s. Barcelona has amazing Gaudi and gothic architecture, some nice beaches and a wonderful port area with fine seafood restaurants.

A dramatic shift in economic conditions has caused London to drop 18 places in the ‘most expensive city’ list, falling from number two in 2007 to twenty this year, with major deals and promotions on offer to drive consumer spending.
London has always been associated with being an expensive city, but with new figures stating the contrary, we are expecting more travellers to take advantage of London’s tourism offerings, as well as discover other notable emerging travel spots around the UK.

The Price Comparison report studied 26 products in 33 different countries across the world. It showed that Oslo was the most expensive city for the third year running.
The report claimed that London is more affordable than Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin.
London has fallen dramatically down a list of the world’s most expensive cities as retailers slash prices in an effort to stimulate consumer spending, according to a new global study.
The authoritative International Price Comparison annual report compares the average retail price of 26 of the world’s most popular consumer goods in 33 countries.
The latest findings provide the most tangible evidence yet that retail prices in the UK have significantly dropped. In 2007, London was the second most expensive city on the planet but it is now the 14th cheapest out of the 33 countries audited – below the global average for the overall cost of goods. According to the PriceRunner.co.uk London prices have dropped in a number of product categories this year, including a 33cl takeaway coffee (from £1.83 to £1.63); a litre of milk (£1.03 to £0.86); and even a Big Mac (£2.45 to £2.29).
And as retailers continue to drop prices in an effort to stimulate high street spending PriceRunner predicts that – if the trend continues – London may soon earn a reputation as being one of the cheapest cities in the world.
An Industry spokesman said: “London, New York and Paris are often held up as cities with a very high cost of living. While Paris is still the fourth most expensive place on the planet, New York is now the fourth cheapest – and remarkably, even prices in London have dropped below the global average. London is now significantly cheaper than many competitive destinations, including Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam and Berlin.”

Prague, I rented a great condo, great location, large, see link. About US$135 per nite. But I next time, I would look into a condo on Castle Hill, as that is where I spent most of my time, and it’s a tram ride or a long walk from the condo I rented, in Josefev (or something like that) just NE of the old town square. Talk to Jiri, he may have something else.
